Garfield Gini-Newman explores how to teach through critical inquiry while nurturing deep conceptual understanding and genuine competence. As an associate professor at OISE/University of Toronto and the senior national consultant with The Critical Thinking Consortium, Garfield has worked with thousands of teachers across grades and subjects, helping them to frame learning around engaging and provocative activities and authentic assessments.  Requests for Garfield’s services have taken him from Asia to the Middle East, Europe, the Caribbean and across North America. His interest in effective teaching and learning has led him to actively explore the challenges and opportunities presented by teaching and learning in the digital age. In addition to his work at the University of Toronto and delivering workshops, Garfield has also authored several articles, chapters in books and seven textbooks and has taught in the faculties of education at York University and the University of British Columbia. His most recent book co-authored with Roland Case, Creating Thinking Classrooms has received widespread praise from leading educators across Canada and internationally.

Keynote Address – Authentically Engaging: Language Learning Through Sustained Inquiry

Few subjects have the rich opportunities for authentic learning as languages do. During the keynote address, Garfield will share a sustained inquiry approach to learning that has teachers “sitting beside” rather that “sitting in judgment” of students. This allows students to develop their abilities in second languages through a safe and engaging failing forward approach where mistakes become rich opportunities to uncover patterns and develop conceptual understanding in languages that contribute to building confidence and fluency.

Saturday’s Keynote Speaker – Rob Oddi

Rob is a change and leadership expert who works with executives, business leaders, and their teams to create powerful change, inspire innovation, develop powerful strategy, and create effective engagement. He is a change and human development expert with over 20 years’ experience delivering transformational change on multi-million dollar projects, programs, and initiatives.

Rob engages audiences internationally on how to employ innovative and brain-based engagement as well as creative and disruptive new technologies to transform teams, culture, and to turn skeptics into followers and get everyone talking about what really matters. A sought-after speaker and thought leader in using creative thinking and problem solving to increase organizational success, Rob inspires, motivates, and infuses creativity and innovation to help organizations eliminate barriers and increase profitability. Keynote Address – Mastering Change to Reach New Heights

As Governments and organizations look to do more with less, how can we remain resilient in times of change to not only embrace it, but also be the change superstar our boards and students need to help them navigate the waters toward greater personal success. This interactive keynote will give you the tools and exclusive knowledge you will need to smash through outdated ideas of change to help not only assess, understand, and justify change,  but to serve and lead as positive agents of change during turbulent times.. Featuring research, best practices, and trends, will give you the ‘know how’ and confidence to start leading the change both at home and in the classroom.
