The University for Foreigners in Siena offers through the Italian Cultural Institute one scholarship to an OMLTA teacher of Italian to attend a 4-week training course in Siena in the month of August 2012.

The scholarship covers the entire amount of the course tuition fee as well as 600 euros (about $ 800) to meet the travel cost. The Italian Cultural Institute will also contribute with $ 400.

Why participate?

Do you feel disconnected from the francophone culture? Are you interested in practising and improving your spoken French? Do you feel the need to be rejuvenated in the French culture of Québec and Canada? Would you enjoy an opportunity to be immersed in the French language and develop materials for use in your Core French classroom? If so, then Projet à Québec is for you!

What is the Projet à Québec?

It is a twelve day adventure! Forty teachers from across the province will enjoy a mixture of classroom and on site experiences that will immerse them in French, improve their language skills, introduce them to new expressions in the language and provide greater depth to their knowledge of the customs and culture of Québec and Francophones. They will also have the opportunity to develop resources that will be of immediate use to them in their classrooms.

Where is the Projet à Québec held and what are the costs?

• Participants will be accommodated at the Université de Laval residences, where course sessions will also be held.
• Excursions in the city and nearby sites are included at no extra cost to the participant.
• Some special meals will be provided.
• Participants must pay their own travel costs to and from Québec.
• Please note: if accepted in the program, the participant must send a deposit cheque for $250 payable to the OMLTA/AOPLV. If the participant completes the program, and participates in ALL activities, these monies will be reimbursed.

To be able to apply for the Projet à Québec, teachers must:

• Currently teach Core French full time in a publicly funded school in Ontario.
• Have a minimum of 3 years French teaching experience.

To complete the application process the following documentation must be received via email by April 12th, 2012 (Email: omlta@omlta.org):

• A completed application form (available here)
• A copy of a valid Ontario Teacher’s certificate
• A reference letter from your current principal or school board language coordinator outlining the benefits to students of your participation in this program (in PDF format)
• A cover letter explaining why you would like to participate in Projet à Québec and how this experience would benefit your students

Projet à Québec Selection Criteria for Participants
The goal of the Ministry’s support for this project is to meet the needs of Core French teachers from across the province. With that in mind, participants will be selected based on the following criteria:

• The participant submits a completed application form with ALL supporting documents as outlined above.
• Representation from across the province, from public and separate boards, elementary and secondary, is required. Priority will be given to this distribution. The support documents will provide the information necessary to further determine the choice of candidates in geographical areas where there are many applicants.

N.B. Teachers who have participated previously in the project will not be considered this time.

The French Embassy in Canada and OMLTA/AOPLV are offering a scholarship for intensive training to a consultant or a teacher of French as a Second Language in Ontario, for l’Université d’été – BELC, « Les métiers du français dans le monde», in Nantes, from July 2nd to July 27th, 2012.

As the soil, however rich it may be cannot be productive without cultivation, so the mind without culture can never produce good fruit.

Can you ever imagine learning a language without Culture? Culture only reinforces and consolidates everything that you learn of that language. In fact, I think it’s the best part of learning a language. I remember early in my second language learning spending time in Quebec and France. The music, the art, the travel and of course the food, it all made it so real for me. So, I hope at the conference this year, you will find the time to Listen to the Music, Share your stories and Live the Culture!

This year, I am thrilled to welcome our keynote speaker, Jowi Taylor. Jowi will be be speaking to the Culture that he has been sharing across Canada with his “Voyageur”, the Six String Nation Guitar. Please do not miss out on this event at our Friday luncheon!

I invite you to take the time to choose the sessions that will enhance your teaching of Culture in the classroom. There are so many wonderful sessions that are provided this year by numerous teachers across Ontario. I want to thank all the educators that submitted workshop proposals and that will be presenting this year.

The scholarship includes course fees, accommodation, meals, medical coverage and some cultural activities.

Please note that transportation (airfare, transfers to and from airport to site) and other incidentals are not covered in this scholarship. The OMLTA will contribute $500 towards the travel costs of the successful candidate.
