In 2007, two Nova Scotia students decided to take action after hearing about a grade 9 student being bullied on his first day of high school for wearing a pink polo shirt to school. The boy was threatened with violence and called homophobic slurs for wearing pink.
That night, grade 12 students, David Shepherd and Travis Price, purchased 50 pink shirts and used social media to encourage other students to come to school the next day wearing pink. The following day, hundreds of students came to school in pink in a showing of solidarity against homophobic bullying. The students’ “sea of pink” campaign caught the eye of media outlets not only in the province, but garnered Canadian and international attention around issues relating to homophobia and bullying in schools.

Since this event, Pink Shirt Day has become a day to highlight bullying awareness and prevention, sending a very visible message – Bullying is not tolerated here.
